Tulsa River Parks has opened a new section of Turkey Mountain, expanding the popular outdoor recreation destination by 90 acres. Named "The Sanctuary," the land was purchased with taxpayer funding, with trail work and amenities added through a $2 million grant from the Darryl and Julie Christner Family Foundation.

The new area features 6 miles of trails and several hubs, including a treehouse-style lookout over a pond.

Trails into the new area are accessible from the upper parking lot at Turkey Mountain, and a new connector from the lower parking lot is under construction.

River Parks held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the expansion opening.
