Emergency management officials in Wagoner County are surveying storm damage after heavy weekend rains triggered dangerous flooding and road washouts.
One hard-hit area is near 91st Street and South 305th East Avenue in Broken Arrow, where flooding wiped out part of the roadway. County crews say they’ve placed barricades to keep drivers safe, but they’re urging people not to go around them.
The flooding left parts of the county road system impassable, prompting emergency barricades to be set up to keep the public away from unsafe areas. The county says ignoring those warnings is both dangerous and illegal.
Wagoner County Commissioner James Hanning said he’s been working around the clock to respond to multiple washouts and road hazards throughout his district following the weekend storms.
Officials say road closures after major storms aren’t just a formality — they’re necessary for public safety. Drivers who bypass traffic-control devices risk getting stranded or hurt.
“It’s unlawful to drive any vehicle through, under, over, or around traffic-control devices or barricades when a section of road has been closed due to flooding,” emergency management said.
As crews continue damage assessments and repairs, officials are stressing one simple message to the public: “Turn around, don’t drown.” The warning could save lives as the area recovers from the latest round of severe weather.
