A K-9 named Lambo is the newest member of Oklahoma’s Task Force 1. Lambo and his handler, Jeff Leon, will respond to emergencies across the country, like tornadoes and hurricanes, for search and rescue efforts.
"Without these dogs and their handlers, we would not be able to go home and sleep well at night knowing we didn't search every structure and know that we left no one behind,” Matt Bell, Program Manager of Oklahoma Task Force 1, said.
It took the Belgian Malinois and Leon more than a year of hard work to become certified. Leon says having a dog like Lambo in a disaster zone is incredibly valuable.
"We have all the tools to do that, but with these guys, we can get done a lot faster,” Leon said. “I mean minutes, and that can mean you can save a life or not."
The training Lambo and the other dogs get is made possible by the Ground Zero Emergency Center, founded by Becky and Barry Switzer.
Lambo’s training was sponsored by the Williams Company.
Since the 2013 Moore Tornado, the Switzers have helped train nearly one hundred search and rescue dogs.
"The dogs we train are the best dogs of dogs,” Switzer said. “They are the Heisman trophy winners; they are the first-round draft choices of all dogs."
But the work he'll do is more than a game, when those seconds count, and the lives of people are on the line.
