Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander says the team’s postseason progress is rooted in daily improvement and a culture forged during the franchise’s toughest years.
Shai didn’t hesitate when asked if the team continues to improve during the playoff grind.
“Every practice, every off day, every game day in itself is an opportunity to get better... That’s why we are where we are.”
The challenge Tyrese Haliburton presents for the Thunder
“Every team has a few guys that get the ball rolling… You want to make them do the things they’re less comfortable doing.”
When asked how the Thunder approach a fast-paced, guard-heavy matchup, SGA didn’t blink:
“Defense first. Always. If we’re able to buckle down defensively, we can take care of the offensive side.”
Indiana thrives in transition. But SGA knows OKC can keep pace and impose their will.
“They’re stubborn in the way they play… but it’s about who can impose their will more.”
SGA didn’t flinch when asked about those 20-win seasons. He welcomed them.
“They’re humbling… those days built the habits that don’t show up in the stat sheet.”
What many saw as wasted years, OKC used as a blueprint. The standard was set when the team was losing. Now that the talent has caught up, the culture is paying dividends.
Shai’s emotional maturity didn’t come naturally.
“As a kid, I used to be very emotional… I’ve learned the more I stay even-keeled, the more I control what I can control.”
He credits a high school coach for changing his perspective. Now, he uses that control as a weapon—and hides every tell from his opponents.
SGA doesn’t give locker room speeches or force his teammates to mimic his ways. He simply sets the tone.
“I don’t try to force it… I just am who I am, and lead by example.”
That authenticity has drawn the team to him—and made his steady hand a beacon when the lights get brightest.
“You never know how many times you get to play for a team like this… Wins or losses, you embrace the journey.”
This team is young, the opportunity is wide open, and the foundation is built to last.
