Black Wall Street to Wall Street
6 cyclists from around the country are taking part in the Ride for Equity event. They’ll be traveling 1,650 miles by bike from historic Black Wall Street in Tulsa to Wall Street in New York. The journey will take 35 days, and the group hopes to arrive in New York on July 4th.
A Tulsan's Connection
Osborne Celestain is with the Community Light Foundation and is the only Tulsan making the trip. It’s something he’s been looking forward to, since it ties into the work he's already doing at home. Last year, he rode through the 13 historic black towns in Oklahoma.
“I felt like ‘how could I not participate in this?” he said.
Generating Conversations
Dwan Dandridge with Black Leaders Detroit says the goal is to start conversations about fairness and race, by connecting 2 streets that represent different sides of American history. Over the trip, the group plans to hold community forums focused on uplifting and drawing support for black business owners.
“We have conversations about equity, race, but most importantly what does it mean to be good neighbors to one another despite our differences. We want to tell the story in a way that will draw people in, and what better way to talk about black wealth being created but also intentionally disrupted by starting in Tulsa,” he said.
