Oklahoma State extended its streak of NCAA Regional bids to 12 as the Cowboys were awarded an at-large berth and No. 3 seed and will be part of the NCAA Athens Regional that includes host and No. 7 national seed Georgia, second-seeded Duke and No. 4 seed Binghamton.
The Cowboys have won 10 of their last 12 games. A streak that started way back on April 27, when they won the series finale against Cincinnati.
Cowboy outfielder Nolan Schubart said, "I wouldn't say there was anything forced that we just manually do. It was a natural gelling of people, I think. For me, I think it was the series with Cincinnati, the Sunday game. Just kind of joking, and we didn't know at that point in the season where we were at. It was myself and Ian saying we've got ten games. Why not just go out for the next ten games? Our approach became just one game at a time and started buying into that, and we saw the results of what it can be when you go pitch by pitch and game by game and not worry about the future too much."
Then, went on to sweep UCF the following weekend and then two out of the three against Baylor.
When the season concludes, OSU pitching coach Rob Walton will be retiring from the sport after 13 years.
A 2018 inductee into the Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame, Walton was a standout pitcher for OSU in his playing days. He went 20-3 in 54 career appearances and helped the Cowboys to College World Series trips in each of his four seasons. You can read more about his impact below.
Head coach Josh Holliday said, "This is where this group of people wanna be, and from Coach Walton's perspective, it's been an awesome 13 years here together. Add that to his great history here as a player, and goes to who we are as people and where we get our education."
OSU will take on Duke to start their 50th appearance in the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Blue Devils are the No. 2 seed in the Athens Regional, and the Cowboys are seeded third. Duke will bring a 37-19 record to the matchup, while Oklahoma State holds a 28-23 record.
Holliday adds, "I had about 3 or 4 hours of film so far and, pipe jump another good amount tonight and in the morning. There's some really talented players. They have a lot of arms in their mix. I don't know, we'll see just yet. They've started a guy on Friday nights that's left handed that appears to have some good stuff, but they have a lot of arms. So, obviously they're coming from the ACC, which is elite baseball every weekend. So they're battle-tested, much like we are. I like their coach a lot. I have a ton of respect for him. I've admired him from a distance for quite some time. I think he does a good job. So they'll be very good. But we're used to very good."
"I think one of the things I look back on with these guys is we started this thing out playing very good teams. We opened with Clemson, regionalized. We followed up with Louisville, a regional team. We finished that weekend with Texas and regional host. And you can go on down the way. We began this journey together as a team was playing the very best from start to finish. So we're ready for what we're going to see how we handle it. It's going to be the fun part. But Duke is talented and, it's a good roster and, they're some size, they've got, you've got a nice, offensive profile. We look at their stats, some good stats there, appears to walk a lot and have some power. They're obviously a pretty intelligent bunch of guys and play as far as what they're trying to do. Usually, high walks and home runs and good batting average says that the hitters don't give much away. So be a great challenge. We'll get more familiar with them here in the next 36, 48 hours."
