A Tulsa Public Schools principal got a big surprise recognition Tuesday morning.

Principal Erica Fraser at John Hope Franklin Elementary School was awarded the Hometown Hero Award by Modern Woodmen of America.

The presentation included remarks and statements from her students and coworkers. Fraser told News On 6 she started as an assistant principal at the school in 2019 before moving up to the role of principal. She's been working for the district as a whole for over 25 years.

The Hometown Hero Award recognizes those who go above and beyond for their community. Fraser said she was pleasantly surprised to get the honor.

"I'm emotional about it because, as I said, the community, the school holds a special part in my heart. And so, to be honored for the work that we sometimes do on the back end. No one really sees it," Principal Fraser said to News On 6 Tuesday.
