On the surface, the Cop Land Classic Bike Ride looks like the start of any group ride. But it isn’t about the distance. The event raises money for the Tulsa Police Officers Memorial, which honors 41 officers who died in the line of duty.
Osborne Celestain has been riding bikes since 2006 and is taking part in the 67-mile ride. But he’s training for a much longer journey. At the end of this month, he will be cycling from Black Wall Street in Tulsa to Wall Street in New York.
“It's a 35-day ride with 4 days off, 1,650 miles,” he said.
Though Celestain is using the Cop Land Classic to prepare for the ride of a lifetime, he remembers why he’s riding today.
"Anybody losing their life is tragic, then when you lose your life on your job or in service of others, it makes it more tragic...any time you can do what you love and support causes, I think that’s a winning combination,” he said.
Celestain plans to leave Tulsa at 7 am on May 31st at 700 North Greenwood.
