One of music and film’s most curious urban legends is coming to life in downtown Tulsa.
Guthrie Green is bringing the so-called “Dark Side of the Rainbow” theory to the big screen, inviting the public to experience Pink Floyd’s iconic album alongside a screening of The Wizard of Oz — and see for themselves if the rumors hold true.
The free event is part of the Green’s outdoor Record Club listening series and includes music, cocktails and community vibes in the heart of the city.
The idea that The Dark Side of the Moon album syncs perfectly with The Wizard of Oz has fascinated fans since the mid-1990s.
The concept gained traction in 1995 after Charles Savage, a writer for the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette, published a piece encouraging readers to mute the movie and instead play the 1973 album, starting with the MGM lion’s roar — either the first or third one.
Savage described the result as “astonishing,” likening the experience to “one long art-film music video for the album.”
Despite the public’s intrigue, members of Pink Floyd have repeatedly denied any intentional connection.
Experts say the phenomenon may be the result of apophenia — the brain’s tendency to find patterns and meaning in unrelated things.
Still, fans continue to test the theory, noting coincidental lyrical matches and musical transitions that seem to align with key moments in the film, like Dorothy’s journey to Oz.
Guthrie Green is embracing the mystery with a free, family-friendly event on Saturday, May 17.
Record Club is Guthrie Green’s signature vinyl listening series in partnership with Josey Records. It showcases newly released and popular records played through the park’s state-of-the-art sound system in a communal, outdoor setting.
