A Mannford mother is speaking out after her daughter was violently attacked inside a high school bathroom — and it was all caught on video. The fight happened a few weeks ago at Mannford High School, and now Amanda Wetzel says she wants those responsible to be held accountable.
Amanda Wetzel says she’ll never forget the phone call that changed everything. It came from one of her daughter’s friends, who witnessed the chaos unfolding in the school bathroom.
"One of my daughter's friends was on the outside of the bathroom while it was happening, and she called me and told me that Brooklyn was getting jumped by several girls, and I needed to get to the high school as fast as possible," Wetzel said.
The fight occurred on April 30th inside a bathroom near the cafeteria. According to Amanda, three students were involved: one who filmed the attack, one who physically assaulted her daughter, Brooklyn, and another who cheered it on.
Amanda says her daughter has never been in trouble at school before. While Amanda eventually contacted the Mannford Police Department, she says she needed the school to act faster to protect her daughter while still on campus.
"I was frustrated because I immediately wanted somebody there to help defend my daughter and to help make sure she feels protected," Wetzel said.
"If I asked for a resource officer, I think they should have brought one in. That's what I asked for," Wetzel said.
Amanda says Brooklyn suffered bruises on her arms, temple, and near her eye. And while the physical wounds may heal, the emotional trauma is ongoing.
"She has said that she refuses to go into the cafeteria because it happened in the bathroom in the cafeteria," Wetzel said.
"Watching the video was really rough. I've never seen anything like that, especially in our little town," Wetzel said.
The detective investigating the case told News On 6 that the matter may be referred to Oklahoma Juvenile Affairs for possible charges, but it could take time.
So far, Mannford Public Schools has not responded to our request for comment.
Amanda Wetzel says she’s speaking out because she doesn’t want any student to feel unsafe at school.
Her daughter is now on summer break, but is already anxious about returning in the fall.
