Oklahomans for Equality and the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma have teamed up to launch a new Free Farmer’s Market designed to support members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.

Organizers hope the event will become a monthly tradition, offering fresh local food, connection and community in an inclusive setting – all at no cost to participants.

First event set for May 23

The first Free Farmer’s Market is set for Friday, May 23 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Dennis R. Niell Equality Center in Downtown Tulsa.

Open only to members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community, the market will offer a traditional farmer’s market experience free of charge.

Fresh food, local support

Oklahomans for Equality (OKEQ) says the market will include items sourced from the Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma, along with additional goods the nonprofit is purchasing on its own.

They expect to have enough food to serve about 50 families at the first event.

Survey Required to Participate

Anyone interested in attending the Free Farmer’s Market will need to complete a short online survey. That’s because the project is funded through a federal grant, and the survey helps organizers comply with reporting requirements. You can find that link here.

Anyone wanting to volunteer can sign up here.

Looking ahead

OKEQ hopes to continue the market every month for the next year, expanding access to fresh food and strengthening support for Tulsa’s 2SLGBTQ+ community.
