If you blinked, you might have missed one of the rarest plays in baseball.
During a game at Fenway Park, the Boston Red Sox executed an improbable 9-8 putout, a defensive gem rarely seen at any level of the sport.
It started in the right-field corner, where Wilyer Abreu tracked down a deep fly ball at the wall. The Red Sox right fielder leapt and made contact with the ball just before it crossed over the fence.
But Abreu couldn’t hold on.
As the ball popped loose, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela was sprinting into a backup position. He snagged the ball on the fly before it could touch the turf, turning what looked like a home run into a highlight-reel out.
The official scoring? A 9-8 putout — right fielder to center fielder — one of the rarest combinations you’ll find in a scorebook.
