The city of McAlester may reduce public pool hours this summer due to a shortage of certified lifeguards.

Jeff Lee Pool is scheduled to open for the 2025 season on Saturday, May 24, with standard operating hours from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 3 to 17, and free for children under 3.

However, city officials warn that the pool’s operating days could be scaled back without adequate staffing. In recent years, a declining number of lifeguard applicants has led to temporary closures and limited hours.

To help reverse that trend, McAlester is encouraging anyone interested in a summer job to apply.

Lifeguard certification is required.

The city recently invested nearly $100,000 in renovations at Jeff Lee Pool to improve safety and comfort for swimmers of all ages.

Those interested in lifeguarding positions can apply on the city's website here.
