Rogers State University was hopping more than usual this week as kangaroos and lemurs paid a special visit to nursing and allied health students during the school’s annual Self-Care Week.

On Monday, April 28, and Thursday, May 1, Long Tail Farms of Owasso brought several young kangaroos and lemurs to the Health Sciences building to help students unwind in the days leading up to finals.

Helping future health professionals manage stress

Self-Care Week is part of an ongoing effort by RSU’s nursing faculty to support student wellness and emotional regulation through intentional self-care.

“Nursing and health professions students face intense academic and clinical demands, and taking time to recharge is vital for long-term success and well-being,” said Dr. Amber Sanchez, assistant professor of nursing and MSN program coordinator.

This year’s lineup included pet therapy with exotic animals, a sound bath experience hosted by Heartland Holistic, and other restorative activities designed to promote mental balance, resilience and stress reduction.

‘Roo Gram’ brings animals to campus

The animal visits, nicknamed “Roo Grams,” are part of Long Tail Farms’ outreach offerings. The Owasso-based farm specializes in private exotic animal tours and visits to homes, schools and workplaces, where visitors can interact with joeys and other exotic animals.

For RSU students preparing for exams, the opportunity to interact with animals offered a light-hearted moment in a demanding academic season — and a reminder to care for their own well-being as they prepare for careers in health care.
