A family is reunited in Skiatook after flooding stranded two boys inside their home for more than thirty hours.
News On 6's Sam Carrico spoke to the boys and their parents about the experience.
These boys cleared their basement, moved the family cars to safety, and even got in a quick kayaking trip in their front yard.
Stranded at home
The water is receding at the Thorpe household in Skiatook, but just yesterday, it was an entirely different scene.
"Honestly, we started doing things from the moment water got ankle deep in the basement," said Bo and Ethan Thorpe. They were the only two at home when flood waters began to rise.
"We had set a plan before that that we might be stuck at home, and if that was the case, then we were to take care of the basement, as we had back in 2019," they said.
Getting to work
They got to work immediately, getting their family memories to safety.
"Timing was very important. We need to move to sensitive stuff now. But we also had to plan for the stuff that was too heavy to move. If there's the water was too deep, we wouldn't be able to maneuver right," they said.
Proud parents
Their parents, James and Amy, were in constant communication with their sons, making sure they were OK.
"It's just stuff, but if you can save it, you should save it, right? I mean, if my husband's power tools are ruined and my freezer full of food gets destroyed, we'll be okay. My boys are more important than that, but there was no way to rescue them at that point," said Amy.
They say they're proud of them for taking the initiative to protect their home.
"There's a verse in the Bible that we read that morning, just happened to be the one for that day's reading. And it says, 'If you discipline your son when he is young, when you are old, he will give you rest.' And that's where we are. They gave us rest," Amy said.
As for Bo and Ethan, they're now looking forward to getting some rest of their own.
Carrico joined the News On 6 team in 2021 but has worked in Tulsa news since 2016. During that time, he covered the 2018 Oklahoma teacher walkout, record flooding in 2019, President Trump's Tulsa rally in 2020, the local impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, a PGA Championship & a LIV Golf Tournament.
