General Motors is recalling nearly 600,000 trucks and SUVs across its Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands due to a manufacturing defect that can cause V8 engines to fail without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says the problem stems from defective engine components that could lead to sudden engine shutdowns. The agency has received at least 39 reports of incidents tied to the issue.
The recall affects vehicles equipped with certain V8 engines. Specific makes and models were not listed in the initial advisory.
GM says it will notify affected owners by June, with instructions on how to schedule a free repair at authorized dealerships.
The automaker has not reported any crashes or injuries related to the defect as of Monday’s announcement.
Vehicle owners can check their VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or contact GM customer service for more information.
