The future of Amtrak’s Heartland Flyer, which connects Oklahoma City to Fort Worth, Texas, is uncertain as funding from the Texas Legislature is set to expire June 30.
The Heartland Flyer has been a rare example of cooperation between neighboring states, with both Oklahoma and Texas sharing the costs to keep the route running. But with Texas' contribution in jeopardy, advocates are urging action.
Texas Rail Advocates are calling on residents to contact lawmakers and push for continued support. Without additional funding, the daily passenger train service could be halted.
Launched in 1999, the Heartland Flyer has served as a vital link between Oklahoma City and the Dallas-Fort Worth area, making stops in Norman, Purcell and other communities along the route. In 2024 alone, more than 81,000 passengers rode the train, according to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT).
“Gas prices are so high, it’s nice to jump on the train and not have to worry about any of that,” said Jared Schwennesen with ODOT.
The train also takes on a festive role each fall, transforming into the popular “OU-Texas game train,” bringing fans to the Red River Rivalry football game.
Operating expenses for the Heartland Flyer total $10.5 million this fiscal year. ODOT covers $4.5 million of those costs. Texas currently contributes nearly the same amount but has not yet committed funds for the upcoming year.
The Texas Department of Transportation declined to comment on pending legislation related to the train’s funding.
Without action from Texas lawmakers, the long-running service could come to a stop this summer.
