If you have old prescriptions collecting dust in your medicine cabinet, you have a safe and easy way to dispose of them this weekend.
Health officials and law enforcement agencies are teaming up for a statewide drug take-back event on Saturday, April 27, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with multiple drop-off points across the Tulsa metro.
Here are five key things to know before you go:
1. Dozens of locations are participating
You can drop off expired or unused prescription medications at several Tulsa-area spots, including:
2. Only one location is accepting sharps
The Reasor’s at 71st Street and Sheridan Road is the only location accepting needles or sharps. Be sure to separate those items before you arrive.
3. It helps keep medications out of the wrong hands
Officials say one of the biggest benefits of these take-back days is preventing accidental poisonings, overdoses and misuse of medications — especially among children and teens.
4. It protects the environment
Flushing medications or tossing them in the trash can contaminate water supplies. Proper disposal keeps local water systems cleaner and safer for everyone.
5. The stats are staggering
According to the Oklahoma State Department of Health, unintentional poisoning is now a leading cause of injury-related death in the state — surpassing even car crashes and gun violence.
The Oklahoma Poison Center received more than 30,000 calls related to accidental poisonings in 2024 alone.
