Now that we're almost to May, Oklahoma gardeners can officially begin planting. Horticulturists recommend waiting until after mid-April to ensure the risk of frost has passed and the weather is more stable. Now is the ideal time to start preparing flower beds, pots and landscaping projects.

Know the Difference: Annuals vs. Perennials

Understanding the difference between annuals and perennials is key to planning a successful garden.

Annuals complete their life cycle in one growing season — they bloom, seed and die within the year.

Perennials, on the other hand, return for multiple seasons. Some perennials may be labeled as "tender," meaning they are less tolerant of cold and may not survive harsh winters.

Pay Attention to Plant Labels

When choosing plants, it's important to read the information provided on the label. Two major factors to consider are sunlight requirements and mature plant height.

Sunlight is typically categorized as full sun (six or more hours per day) or shade (less than six hours). Matching the plant’s needs to the location is crucial for healthy growth.

Additionally, checking the plant’s expected height helps with proper placement in the garden — taller varieties should be placed toward the back, while shorter ones work well at the front or in containers.

Recommended Plants for Oklahoma Gardens

Several plant varieties perform well in Oklahoma's climate. Popular choices for sunny areas include:

  1. Senorita Rosalita Cleome: A tall, low-maintenance flower known for its vibrant color and resistance to disease.
  2. Gerbera Daisies: Bright, cheerful blooms in a variety of colors that thrive in full sun and also do well in pots.
  3. Lantanas: Heat-tolerant and long-blooming, these are ideal for summer gardens and continue flowering well into the season.
  4. Bubblegum Petunias: A resilient option for roadside planters or home gardens, known for their vivid pink blooms and durability.

For shaded areas, good options include:

  1. Impatiens: A reliable annual that adds color to shady spots throughout the growing season.
  2. Coleus: Grown for its colorful foliage, coleus comes in many varieties and thrives in low-light conditions.

Final Tips for a Successful Season

Before planting, take photos of garden spaces and bring them to local nurseries for personalized advice. Most garden centers have knowledgeable staff who can offer recommendations based on sun exposure and soil conditions.

Don’t forget the basics: consistent watering, occasional fertilizing, and a willingness to experiment. Fertilizer doesn’t need to be complicated — a general-purpose blend works for most flowers.

With the right preparation and plant selection, spring is the perfect season to start a thriving garden in Oklahoma.
