A local nonprofit is making it easier for Green Country residents to recycle unused electronics this Earth Day responsibly.

Green Country Habitat for Humanity is hosting its first-ever electronic waste (E-waste) drive-thru recycling event on Monday, April 22, also known as Earth Day. The group is teaming up with The Sustain Group to collect unwanted tech and keep it out of Oklahoma landfills.

Why E-Waste Matters

Electronic waste is one of the fastest-growing waste streams in the world. Improper disposal can lead to hazardous materials leaking into soil and water, and even spark landfill fires.

“Anything we can do to keep things out of the landfill... that’s kind of our motto here at the ReStore,” said Cameron Walker with Green Country Habitat for Humanity. “Earth Day is as good a day as any to highlight that need and give people a place to donate.”

What You Can Recycle

From old phones to broken computers, many electronics will be accepted during the event. Not sure what qualifies? Check out this list for what you can and cannot drop off:

THEY DO ACCEPT:

  1. Computers/laptops
  2. Tablets/iPads/Cell Phones/Telephones
  3. LCD/CRT Monitors
  4. LCD TV $5 fee/CRT TV $15 fee/ Rear Projection TV $50
  5. Li-Ion/UPS/UPS Batteries
  6. Stereos/Cameras
  7. Blu-Ray players/DVD players, VHS players
  8. Printers/Scanners/Copiers
  9. Data Center Equipment
  10. Servers

There's no need to worry about personal information either. Walker says The Sustain Group is a certified electronics recycler that can safely wipe data from devices.

“So yeah, your privacy, your security—all that will be taken care of,” Walker said.

Where and When to Drop Off

The Earth Day E-waste drive-thru will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations:

  1. Habitat for Humanity Broken Arrow (728 W New Orleans St, Broken Arrow, OK 74011)
  2. The ReStore Rack (1112 S Memorial Dr, Tulsa, OK 74112)

More Than Just Electronics

In addition to tech, Habitat is also accepting home goods, furniture and building materials as donations. As a bonus, donors will receive a free plant from Southwood Landscape and Nursery, while supplies last.

Looking Ahead

In 2024, the nonprofit helped divert nearly 3 million pounds of material from landfills. This year, they hope to surpass that total.

“We hope people come out, clear out their clutter, and make a difference,” said Walker.
