Tulsa’s Global District, centered around 21st Street and Garnett Road, is rolling out new initiatives aimed at revitalizing one of the city’s most diverse neighborhoods.
Under new leadership, the district is focusing on business growth, safety, and affordable housing to build a stronger community.
New leadership, new vision
Executive Director Alejandro Garcia is leading the effort, launching a Business and Property Association to connect local entrepreneurs and property owners directly with city leaders.
Public meetings have already begun, bringing business owners face-to-face with Tulsa Police Chief Dennis Larsen and Mayor Monroe Nichols.
Tackling safety and walkability concerns
One of the top priorities is improving safety and walkability in the district. Garcia said residents and business owners are voicing concerns about inadequate lighting, large parking lots, and a lack of pedestrian-friendly spaces.
“Just the fact of getting together to say… okay, what can we do to improve walkability? Because it’s not precisely the area—it could be more walkable,” Garcia said. “Or maybe even create a guard where police can monitor certain times of the day.”
Affordable housing on the horizon
Alongside business revitalization, the district is working with city leaders on plans to add more affordable housing. The goal is to meet growing demand as more entrepreneurs set up shop in East Tulsa.
“So yes, we’re facing this… that people need to live here close to the businesses,” Garcia said. The housing project is expected to be completed by 2027 or 2028.
Training and resources for entrepreneurs
The Global District is also launching specialized training programs to help business owners succeed. Offerings include support with bookkeeping, marketing, and strategic planning to boost long-term growth.
A look ahead: beautification and business incubation
Construction is underway on a new business incubator designed to help local entrepreneurs launch and grow their ventures. While an opening date has not been announced, leaders say the incubator will serve as a key part of the district’s economic revitalization.
The organization is also working on beautification projects—including new murals and trails—to bring fresh energy and pride to the neighborhood.
Celebrate culture at the Asian American Night Market
The Tulsa Global District is hosting the Asian American Night Market on Friday, May 16—a free event for families to enjoy food, performances, and cultural demonstrations.
The event will feature cuisine from across Asia, along with performers from countries including India, China, Japan, and Korea. Highlights include kendo demonstrations, showcasing the Japanese martial art, and traditional dance from the Hmong community.
The market takes place at 1801 S. Garnett Road from 5 to 9 p.m.
