The Greenwood Cultural Center’s Legacy Award Dinner is shining a spotlight on a familiar face with deep ties to Tulsa’s historic Greenwood District: Nathaniel Eugene 'Nate' Burleson.
Burleson — known for his NFL career, his co-hosting role on CBS Mornings, and his magnetic presence across sports, news, and entertainment — is this year’s honoree. But it’s his advocacy for Black culture and constant upliftment of Black Wall Street’s legacy that’s taking center stage.
The annual Legacy Award Dinner is more than a night of celebration — it’s the Greenwood Cultural Center’s only fundraising event of the year.
Proceeds support the organization’s historical, cultural, and educational programming, which preserves the spirit of Black Wall Street and empowers future generations.
Burleson may be a national media figure, but his connection to Tulsa is personal. His wife, Atoya Burleson, is rooted in Greenwood’s history, and Nate has become a vocal supporter of the district’s story — often weaving its message into his work on CBS Mornings, his public appearances, and even his social media.
“Wherever he goes, Nate carries Black excellence with him,” said Greenwood Cultural Center representatives. “That is the spirit of our Black Wall Street. Tulsa. Oklahoma. America.”
The Legacy Award Dinner embodies more than a tribute. It serves as a call to action for the Tulsa community and beyond: to preserve Black history, to educate the next generation, and to invest in a future grounded in resilience and pride.
Attendees are invited to support GCC’s mission by attending the dinner, making a donation, or simply spreading awareness of the center’s work.
