The Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs (ODVA) is rolling out a major change in staffing at the state’s seven veterans homes. Starting April 20, caregivers will begin working 12-hour shifts instead of the traditional eight-hour model.
The new schedule applies to Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, and Certified Nurse Aides, and is designed to enhance both the quality of care for residents and the work-life balance for staff.
ODVA leaders say this transition is a step toward creating a more consistent and compassionate care environment. The shift from 8-hour to 12-hour workdays will reduce daily handoffs between staff.
Fewer transitions mean consistent care for residents who depend on routine, as well as giving caregivers more time off between work periods.
“Our veterans deserve consistent, compassionate care—and our caregivers deserve a schedule that supports their wellness,” said ODVA Homes Director Rob Arrington. “By moving to 12-hour shifts, we’re creating a win-win situation that allows us to recruit and retain high-quality care professionals while enhancing the continuity of care for our residents.”
ODVA says it is actively hiring full-time and part-time care staff across all seven veterans homes. In addition to the new 12-hour shifts, the agency offers competitive pay, paid training, strong benefits, and a supportive team-oriented work environment.
