Investigators with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office have solved a year-long kidnapping and robbery case. Sheriff Tommie Johnson said in a press conference held on Tuesday that all six suspects in custody were from Houston, Texas, and involved in a criminal drug ring. Investigators believed the men were in Oklahoma City to buy $100,000 in black-market marijuana.
The kidnapping outside Coffee Jerks near northwest 178th and MacArthur last June was caught on multiple cameras.
“These Flock cameras and these cameras on the Tesla ultimately led to these bad guys being apprehended,” said Sheriff Tommie Johnson, Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
Johnson said cameras on the victim's Tesla showed one of the suspects unmasked and the suspects' car. Facial recognition quickly identified the unmasked man as Kadarryus Caples. He was arrested in Texas weeks later and extradited to the Oklahoma County jail. Investigators then tied Caples' phone records to five other suspects Johnson says were involved in the coordinated kidnapping, extortion, and robbery.
“Anytime you have individuals who are willing to kidnap someone, tie them up, beat them, and take their money,” said Johnson. “These are extremely dangerous individuals we were dealing with.”
The victim claimed the men stole $250,000 in cash from her car and took her phone to CashApp themselves $10,000.
“We do not believe it was a random act,” said Johnson.
The kidnapping enacted a Casey Alert. Deputies were able to ping the victim’s phone allowing them to find the victim at an apartment complex in southwest Oklahoma City where the suspects released her.
Five of the suspects are in custody in Houston and will be extradited to Oklahoma City at some point. Caples was released from the Oklahoma County jail last July on a $300,000 bond. Caples has been charged with kidnapping for extortion and armed robbery.
