A wrecker driver in Oklahoma City survived a fatal crash that killed the occupants of a truck that caused the collision, according to Oklahoma City Police.

Sunday morning, police responded to SW 44th and Rancho Drive, where a pickup had collided with a wrecker with Puckett’s Towing. A second wrecker driver’s dash camera captured the moment his colleague was t-boned, sending orange and blue flames shooting into the sky. Paul Scott was working nearby when he witnessed the crash and its aftermath.

“It was a big fireball for about 20 minutes,” said witness Paul Scott.

Scott said just seconds before the crash, the truck failed to yield to a stop sign.

“He ran the intersection without looking,” said Scott.

Surveillance cameras from a nearby business were also rolling—as flames shot across the roadway, and ignited diesel that spewed from the wrecker's fuel tank. Police said the driver of the pickup was ejected--and thrown under his own vehicle.

“I don’t know how he got underneath the thing, but he was pinned underneath the truck,” said Scott.

The driver’s passenger was seatbelted in the mangled truck and later died.

“It was terrible man, it was really terrible,” said Scott.

Leading up to the fatal crash, police said the pickup was involved in a hit-and-run collision and was fleeing the scene as another driver attempted to take down the truck's tag. An empty case of beer was later inside the mangled pickup.

The owner of Puckett's Towing said the fuel tank, which was located under the seat of his driver, took a direct hit, causing the explosion.

At the time of the crash, the wrecker driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown into his passenger door, where he escaped. With his driver’s side door damaged, and his cab on fire, his employer believes that had his employee been seatbelted, he may have burned alive.

Police have not named the two people who were killed in the crash.
