What to Know About Tariffs—the Latest

President Trump said Wednesday that he was unilaterally raising the US tariff rate on China to 125% while granting a 90-day pause on what he said would be "reciprocal" tariffs on other countries.

In a post on Wednesday on Truth Social, Trump said,

"I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. Conversely, and based on the fact that more than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, ... and that these Countries have not, at my strong suggestion, retaliated in any way, shape, or form against the United States, I have authorized a 90 day PAUSE, and a substantially lowered Reciprocal Tariff during this period, of 10%, also effective immediately."

Here is the latest on Trump’s tariffs:

CHINA

Earlier on Wednesday, China said it would raise its tariff on US goods to 84%. This came after the Trump administration followed through on a threat to increase the US tariff on Chinese goods to 104%. Trump then bumped it even higher, to 125%.

EU

President Trump had announced he would add a 20% reciprocal tariff on goods from the EU, on top of the baseline 10%. In response, the EU voted to adopt a 25% tariff on a range of US goods, but that has not gone into effect yet. That and the fact that Trump says many of these countries have reached out to enter into trade negotiations are why he decided to pause the new reciprocal tariff for 90 days.

MEXICO & CANADA

Tariffs on America’s top two trading partners remain unchanged. Items that are compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) are not taxed, while non-compliant imports are taxed 25%. Two exceptions are energy and potash – they are taxed at a 10% rate.

IMPORTED AUTOS

The president’s 25% tariff on imported autos and light trucks, as well as imported auto parts, remains in effect.

STEEL & ALUMINUM

The president’s 25% tariff on imported aluminum and steel also remains in effect, unchanged by Wednesday’s actions.
