The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office will host a free “Citizen Response to Active Shooter” class on Tuesday, Sept. 23rd.

The Tulsa County Sheriff's Office has trained various groups in active shooter response, and for the first time, they are offering a community-wide class.

The FBI reported 484 active shooter incidents in the U.S. between 2000 and 2022.

Corporal Daniel Gullett with TCSO said this is why knowing what to do in an active shooter situation is crucial.

Gullett, who will teach part of the class, said one of the strategies they will cover is "Run, Hide, Fight." They will also teach how to communicate effectively and provide basic first-aid training.

Corporal Gullett said participants will also learn how law enforcement responds to these situations.

“As we train for our response, we’re also helping the civilian response train as well," Gullett said. "We’ve always found that the more knowledge people have, the more training, the more powerful they feel. That’s something that we hear a lot in these courses I just don’t know if it’s gonna happen. I'm worried about it all the time. By taking one of these courses, it gives them the power back."

The class will be held at the Tulsa Tech Lemley Campus on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Participants will also be entered to win free tickets to the Tulsa State Fair.
