Grandchildren Make Lifesaving Call For Their Grandmother

It's true that not all heroes wear capes, and some just graduated kindergarten.

Seven-year-old Hopelyn Ellis and 6-year-old sister Jayden stayed calm under pressure when their grandmother Kathryn Ramos, who they call Nonnie, was having chest pains while driving just south of Union City. She was able to pull over but was incapacitated.

Her granddaughters knew what to do.

Hopelyn called 911 and the girls were able to give an accurate and clear description of where they were and what happened, allowing emergency crews to get on the scene quickly and save their grandmother's life.

"It was amazing to me how strong they were," said Ramos.

When asked if they were scared, Hopelyn emphatically stated, "No! We was brave!"

Union City police, fire and EMS honored both of the girls for that bravery Monday night.

Police Chief Richard Stephens said cases like this illustrate how important it is to educate children about emergency situations.

"Don't ever stop teaching, because they watch and they listen and they learn," said Stephens.

A lesson learned, and a life saved.

"I don't know if I'd be here if it wasn't for those two little ones," said Ramos. "I'm very proud of them, my angles, and they're my little heroes and my babies."

Hopelyn and Jayden said when they grow up, they want to be police officers and firefighters.
