Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer reflected on the Sooners’ 24-13 win over Michigan in a postgame press conference, sharing insights on his running game, leadership moments, and what it meant to beat a top-15 opponent in front of a sold-out crowd.
>>> John Mateer has 2 TDs rushing, 1 passing as No. 18 Oklahoma beats No. 15 Michigan 24-13.
Here are the top takeaways from Mateer’s comments:
Mateer said his rushing wasn’t necessarily planned, but the Sooners stuck with it when it worked.
“You know, I wouldn't say we sat down and he (Coach Venables) was like, you better, you know, get ready to run. That didn't happen. But as it was going and as we were getting a plus one run game, they're really good up front. So you just got to do it. And it was working. So we're going to keep doing it.”
The Sooners’ offense strung together a nearly nine-minute drive in the fourth quarter, something Mateer said was the proudest moment of the night.
“That nine-minute drive is… that was awesome. I'm so proud as O-line and running back as tight ends. That's what it takes. I just kept looking at the clock and I was like dang, this is really working. We're really getting after them.”
Mateer praised his connection with wide receiver Deion Burks after another strong outing.
“Yeah, I think another week. I mean, he's a really good football player, and he gets to where I need him to be, and I'm really proud of him and his work.”
Mateer said the atmosphere at Gaylord Family — Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on Saturday night was unforgettable.
“Yeah, it was awesome. I mean, walking in, (College) Gameday being here, you know, just the environment. It's something you dream of and it's something I've always dreamed of. So, I mean, to be able to do it, I mean, is a blessing. And I looked at it that way, like this is a blessing from God and the opportunity is great.”
While Mateer acknowledged the magnitude of the win, he said it’s already time to prepare for what’s next.
“We've been thinking about this game for a long time… But I wouldn't say it's validation, because we play in seven days. And there's no time to just sit on it. And you chill out tonight, and then tomorrow morning, try back to work.”
