Body oils can be an effective option for people struggling with dry, flaky skin. Dr. Anderson says oils provide deep hydration by creating a barrier that locks in moisture and helps prevent irritation.

Lotions remain popular because they feel light and non-greasy, but they often contain alcohol that can worsen dryness or trigger eczema flare-ups. Creams are thicker and offer more relief, but oils may outperform both by targeting especially dry spots such as elbows, knees, and heels.

While oils can be messier and more expensive, they often last longer since only a small amount is needed. Options like vitamin E and argan oil can also improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines, giving a natural glow.

However, dermatologists caution that oils may not be suitable for acne-prone skin, as they can clog pores and worsen breakouts.
