Teachers who are new to Sand Springs Public Schools were introduced and treated to gift boxes and school supplies by the Rotary Club of Sand Springs.

The Rotary Club has celebrated new-to-the-district teachers for 10 years now, whether or not they're new to the profession. At a luncheon on Friday at Charles Page High School, 48 new teachers were given boxes with gift cards and other freebies, worth an estimated $530 each. Teachers also left with boxes of school supplies.

Superintendent Sherry Durkee said the recognition, especially from groups outside the school system, helps the district attract and retain teachers. Students start classes on Wednesday in Sand Springs.
