A championship Little League game in New York was briefly halted when a dust devil swept across the field, sending dirt swirling and forcing players to scatter.
The incident happened Sunday (August 10th) during the 18th annual Summer Slam championship in Penfield, New York. The Crimson Pride 10-and-under team was facing Prime Baseball when a dust devil suddenly formed near home plate.
Officials estimated the swirling column of wind reached speeds between 50 and 55 mph. The strong gusts picked up dust and debris, leaving a visible trail before slowly dissipating.
Players and coaches moved to safety as the dust devil passed. Clear skies remained overhead, but the phenomenon was likely caused by differences in heating and cooling across the field, said Chief Meteorologist Travis Meyer.
Despite the disruption, the Crimson Pride team went on to win the championship. The players posed for a team photo afterward, marking the unusual weather event as a memorable moment in their title run.
