While the Pacific and Central Pacific have been busy this year with multiple named storms, the Atlantic hurricane season has been fairly quiet so far. A few named systems have formed recently, but none have brought significant impacts to land.
Tropical Storm Erin has officially formed just west of the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic.
As of this afternoon, it’s packing winds of about 45 mph and moving west at a steady 20 mph. It’s still way out in the open ocean, about 280 miles northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands and more than 2,300 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands.
The storm is expected to gradually strengthen over the next few days, reaching Category 3 Hurricane status by late Friday or early Saturday, but for now, there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect. Tropical-storm-force winds currently extend out about 35 miles from the center.
We’ll keep an eye on it, but for now, Erin’s just getting started far out at sea.
Disorganized showers and thunderstorms continue in association with another trough of low pressure over the central tropical Atlantic. While dry air remains a limiting factor, there is still a chance for gradual development during the middle of the week as the system moves generally northward over the open Atlantic.
Chance of development in 48 hours: Low (10%). Chance of development in 7 days: Low (10%).
Both systems are expected to remain over the open Atlantic for the short term. But Tropical Storm Erin will be watched closely as it moves westward over the next week.
So far in the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, four tropical cyclones have formed, and all of them reached named, tropical storm status but did not reach hurricane levels: Tropical Storm Andrea, Tropical Storm Barry, Tropical Storm Chantal, and Tropical Storm Dexter. Next up on the list is Erin.
Here’s the full name list for the 2025 Atlantic season: Andrea, Barry, Chantal, Dexter, Erin, Fernand, Gabrielle, Humberto, Imelda, Jerry, Karen, Lorenzo, Melissa, Nestor, Olga, Pablo, Rebekah, Sebastien, Tanya, Van, Wendy.
