Former Oklahoma State running back Nathan Simmons, son of former head coach Bob Simmons, died Saturday in a hit-and-run crash in Westminster, Colorado. He was 46.

Simmons followed his father from Colorado to Oklahoma State in the mid-90s and played for the Cowboys from 1996 to 1999. He rushed for 1,990 yards and 14 touchdowns in his college career, with his best season in 1998 when he led the team with 937 yards.

A standout in the classroom, Simmons earned his degree in two years and began graduate work during his junior season.

Current head coach Mike Gundy, who coached under Bob Simmons in 1995, shared his condolences on social media, saying:

“Condolences and prayers to Coach Simmons and his family with the loss of former Cowboy Nathan Simmons.”
