The Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids are both peaking this week, giving Oklahoma skywatchers a chance to catch a few shooting stars before dawn.
Both showers are expected to peak overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday morning (July 29–30), with the best viewing between 2 and 4 a.m., when skies are darkest and meteor activity usually increases.
Although these meteors originate from constellations low in the southern sky, they’re still visible across northern Oklahoma. Skies are expected to be mostly clear during the peak, and the waxing crescent moon (just 27% full) will keep light interference low.
Southern Delta Aquariids
Alpha Capricornids
While the Delta Aquariids bring higher numbers, the Capricornids can deliver some of the season’s most dramatic fireballs.
With two meteor showers overlapping and minimal moonlight, this is one of the best opportunities of the summer to view meteors. Conditions look favorable overnight Tuesday into early Wednesday, though more clouds are possible late Wednesday night into Thursday morning along with a few storms along the Oklahoma and Kansas state line region.
Both meteor showers remain active well into August, but the next couple of nights may offer the best chance for viewing meteors.
While these meteor showers can offer some great moments, don’t expect a constant stream of meteors across the sky.
Rates can vary, and sometimes it takes patience to catch a few good ones. Many people are surprised by how subtle meteor showers can be, so don't go in with unrealistic expectations.
