A cupola is a small, often dome-shaped structure that sits atop a building. Traditionally used for ventilation or aesthetics, cupolas can also serve as architectural landmarks — like the one that used to crown Broken Arrow’s former opera house.
The original cupola was removed more than 50 years ago due to deterioration. It was put away
While residents remembered it fondly, no known photographs of the structure survived, making a replica difficult to design.
Still, longtime residents like Larry Pennington remembered its presence. He says it was once a signature of the Main Street skyline.

The new bronze cupola was crafted based on memory and architectural references. It’s built to last at least 20 years and was installed on the same roof where the original once stood.
“This thing catches your eye coming down the street,” Pennington said.
The new cupola was built in Kentucky and installed in two phases. Steel support beams were placed on June 19.
The effort to bring the cupola back was led by community members, including Pennington and retired educator Dr. Clarence Oliver, who first suggested the idea and celebrated his 93rd birthday the day it returned.
The public unveiling is set for 7 p.m. Thursday night above Nature’s Tavern in the Rose District. The evening will include music from the Tulsa Opera and a group sing-along of “Oklahoma.”
But don't spill the beans, it's supposed to be a surprise🤫!
