The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is planning for the future and asking residents to help shape it. ODOT has released its 2050 Long Range Transportation Plan, which outlines how the state aims to modernize its transportation systems over the next 25 years. The public comment period is open now through Aug. 11.
The LRTP lays out strategic goals for improving Oklahoma’s infrastructure, including highways, rail networks, ports and active transportation like bike lanes and sidewalks. The plan is designed to guide decision-making, project funding and innovation through the year 2050.
Highways remain a top priority, with the plan proposing upgrades to pavement, bridges and intersections statewide. Traffic safety and efficiency are central to ODOT’s long-term investment strategy.
The plan also identifies opportunities to expand and modernize freight and passenger rail services. By improving rail corridors, ODOT aims to support economic growth while reducing roadway congestion.
Oklahoma’s inland ports, such as those along the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System, play a key role in the economy. The LRTP includes proposals to enhance port infrastructure and improve connections to rail and highway networks.
Bicycle and pedestrian access is also addressed in the plan. ODOT is exploring ways to create safer, more accessible paths for non-motorized travel, particularly in urban and suburban areas.
Residents are invited to review the draft plan and provide feedback through Aug. 11. Input from the public will help shape the final version of the transportation strategy.
