On July 8, flooding forced the Sequoyah County Boys & Girls Club in Sallisaw to close down and relocate. Staff say approximately 50 children were inside the building that morning when water began to enter through the doors.

No injuries were reported, but club leadership says the building sustained extensive interior damage, forcing a full closure.

Property Damage Estimated in the Hundreds of Thousands

According to CEO Laura Kuykendall, the club’s facility suffered damage to:

  1. Flooring (including asbestos tile now requiring certified removal)
  2. Furniture and classroom equipment
  3. Educational materials and electronics
  4. Recreational spaces, including game tables and sports gear

While the club had flood insurance, Kuykendall says it will not cover the full scope of damage.

$3.5 Million Needed for New Facility

Kuykendall says building a new facility is the long-term goal.

Plans for that facility are estimated to cost more than $3 million, using ARPA dollars, insurance and donations.

The previous location could accommodate 125 children; a new facility would expand that number significantly, helping meet rising demand for youth programs in the region.

Temporary Location Secured, But Not for Long

The First Baptist Church of Sallisaw is currently housing the club’s summer program. Laura says that with school starting back up soon, their window to find a new place is getting tighter.

GoFundMe Campaign Launched

To support recovery efforts, the club has launched an online fundraiser. As of July 18, the GoFundMe page has raised just over $1,600, far short of the full goal.

Funds will go toward:

  1. Immediate relocation costs (transportation, rent, moving equipment)
  2. Replacing lost classroom materials and electronics
  3. Initial design and permitting for the new facility
