While most kids spend summer break at the pool or a theme park, a group in Kellyville is choosing a very different kind of adventure — one filled with dirt, animals, and unexpected lessons.
High On A Hill Dairy Goat Farm is hosting its fifth youth summer camp this week, and for many of the kids attending, it’s their first real experience on a farm.
From feeding goats to collecting eggs, campers like Keenan are learning by doing — even if that means stepping in a little more than just mud.
“Don’t look at that because that’s actually poop,” camper Keenan said.
The camp is designed to be part fun, part hands-on education. Campers explore everything from horseback riding and fishing to chasing chickens and asking big questions — like whether horses are supposed to roll in the dirt.
Camp leader Leah Chatron says that kind of curiosity is exactly the point.
“It’s a lot more fun…like they’re learning through hands-on stuff. Not like me, actually ‘teaching teaching,’” she said.
Chatron started the camps just a year ago, hoping to give kids a glimpse of a life many have never seen.
“I never really thought I’d be doing this stuff, because I didn’t grow up with them. But here I am,” Chatron said.
For both the kids and the camp leaders, it’s clear: sometimes not knowing is the best place to start — because that’s where the learning begins.
High On A Hill plans to host more day camps in the coming weeks. For dates and registration info, check out their website: https://www.highonahilldairygoats.com/general-7
