Educators, families, self-advocates, and service providers from across Oklahoma are coming together this week for the second annual Inclusive Communication Conference, a free, statewide event focused on improving learning environments for individuals of all abilities.

Held Thursday, July 17 at Metro Technology Centers’ Springlake Campus, the conference is co-hosted by the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma (AFO), the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma (DSACO), and Unity Forward Oklahoma (UFO). This year’s theme, “Bridge to Success: Behavior & Communication Strategies for Inclusive Learning Environments,” highlights the importance of equitable access and innovation in education from early childhood through young adulthood.

“Whether you're a caregiver, educator, or self-advocate, your role is essential in shaping inclusive learning environments where every student can thrive,” said Emily Scott, executive director of the Autism Foundation of Oklahoma.

Key Highlights of the Conference:

  1. Hands-on workshops with evidence-based tools for home, classroom, and clinical use
  2. Training in sensory supports and methods for non-traditional communicators
  3. Navigation guidance for education, healthcare, and community systems
  4. Family-school collaboration strategies and culturally responsive advocacy
  5. Creative learning approaches using arts, technology, and self-expression

In addition to the robust schedule of breakout sessions and training, attendees will have access to a resource fair featuring local and statewide organizations committed to supporting learners with disabilities.

The event officially begins with a community mixer at Social Capital OKC on Wednesday at 5 p.m., offering early networking and informal conversation for participants and speakers.

Supported by sponsors including the Developmental Disabilities Council of Oklahoma, Tinker Federal Credit Union, Bob Moore Subaru, and the Oklahoma Electric Cooperative, the conference remains free and open to the public to ensure access for all who serve or support individuals with disabilities.
