A new report is showing real estate investors are buying more of the homes on the market.

The report from real estate data provider BatchData shows investors bought 27% of the homes on the market in the first quarter of this year.

BatchData defines investment property as any house that isn't used as the buyer's home.

Investors bought an average of 18 and a half percent of the homes on the market between 2020 and 2023.

BatchData says the increase could be because of an overall fall in the housing market.

The U.S. housing market has been at a slump since 2022, hitting a nearly 30-year low last year.

BatchData says high costs for houses and high interest rates on mortgages are largely to blame for that slump in the housing market.

The new report says investor-owned homes account for roughly 20% of the nation’s 86 million single-family homes.
