With temperatures soaring during Oklahoma’s hottest months, many residents are seeing their electric bills spike. But there are simple ways to lower energy usage and keep costs under control.

OG&E is offering guidance on how customers can stay comfortable while also saving money this summer — from thermostat adjustments to smarter appliance use.

Here are 11 expert-backed tips to help you reduce your energy bill:

1. Adjust your thermostat

Set your thermostat to the highest temperature that’s still comfortable. Every degree you raise it could save you 3 to 4 percent on your electric bill.

2. Close drapes and blinds

Blocking sunlight on the warmest side of your home can reduce indoor temperatures and keep your air conditioner from working overtime.

3. Boost home efficiency with upgrades

OG&E’s Energy Efficiency Program offers qualifying customers upgrades like attic insulation and sealing windows and doors. These changes can offset energy costs over time.

4. Use fans to stay cool

Ceiling fans use about as much electricity as a standard light bulb but can make a room feel significantly cooler — helping you rely less on air conditioning.

5. Get an A/C tune-up

A properly maintained A/C unit runs more efficiently. OG&E offers an A/C Tune-Up service that can increase your unit’s efficiency by up to 30% for eligible households.

6. Replace or clean air filters

Dirty filters force your system to work harder. Cleaning or replacing them regularly can improve performance and cut costs.

7. Cook smarter

Skip the oven and try using a slow cooker, outdoor grill or air fryer. Ovens heat up your kitchen and increase your cooling load.

8. Run large appliances at night

Avoid using washers, dryers and dishwashers during peak heat. Instead, run them overnight to reduce both temperature and energy strain.

9. Check your Energy Insights

Monitor your energy usage in real-time by logging into your OG&E Energy Insights dashboard at OGE.com. It can help you understand when and how you use electricity most.

10. Switch to LED bulbs

LEDs use less electricity and generate less heat than traditional bulbs, helping you save energy throughout your home.

11. Unplug idle electronics

Even when turned off, devices like TVs, chargers and game consoles can draw power. Unplug them when not in use to stop energy waste.
