The Tulsa Zoo has begun introducing Asian elephants Billy and Tina to the rest of its herd following the duo's completion of a standard quarantine period.
The process started with "howdies," a controlled method of introduction that allows elephants to safely interact through a barrier before making full contact. According to the zoo, Billy and Tina were able to see, smell and hear the other elephants even during quarantine, helping ease the transition.
"Our team takes a strategic approach to introductions, considering each elephant's personality, social structure and familiarity with one another to support positive experiences," the zoo said in a social media post.
So far, staff have observed calm behavior, vocalizations, trunk touches and relaxed postures — all encouraging signs that the introductions are going smoothly.
Zoo guests may see different combinations of elephants together as the care team continues the integration process.
