Tulsa Police are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting after a woman armed with a butcher knife confronted officers responding to a disturbance call late Saturday night.
Authorities say the incident began around 9 p.m. near Admiral Place and 193rd East Avenue when a neighbor called 911 to report a domestic disturbance involving knives.
When officers arrived, they spoke briefly with the neighbor before approaching the home.
Responding to the Scene
Tulsa Police Captain Richard Meulenberg said officers knocked on the door and were immediately met by the woman holding a large kitchen butcher knife.
“As soon as they knock on the door, they find a woman who was unclothed and had a large butcher knife, a kitchen butcher knife, and came at the officers,” Meulenberg said. “One officer fired based on her actions. She was struck and officers started first aid and she succumbed to her injuries.”
Victim’s Identity Withheld Pending Notification
Investigators believe the woman was 49 years old, but her name has not been released as police work to notify her family.
“We believe that the victim or the suspect with the knife was a 49-year-old white female. She is deceased. We are not releasing her name at this time. We still have to notify next of kin, so there’s still a lot to do with this investigation,” Meulenberg said.
No officers or bystanders were hurt.
Evidence and Witness Interviews Underway
Police said homicide detectives are reviewing video surveillance footage of the incident and interviewing multiple witnesses who were taken downtown.
“We have information from neighbors that there may have been drugs or alcohol involved, but we won’t know that yet until the medical examiner gets a toxicology [report] to figure that out,” Meulenberg said.
