Plans to build a new visitor center at one of Oklahoma’s most iconic roadside attractions are progressing, even as the City of Catoosa searches for a new construction partner.
Catoosa city leaders broke ground on a new visitor center at the Blue Whale in early June. The project is intended to improve the experience for tourists ahead of Route 66’s centennial celebration next year.
Design renderings posted on the City of Catoosa’s website offer a glimpse of the planned visitor center. Residents who spoke with News On 6 say they’re excited to see the historic Route 66 landmark receive an upgrade.
City officials say the original bids for the project came in over budget. As a result, the city has reopened the bidding process in hopes of securing a more cost-effective construction plan.
The Blue Whale of Catoosa draws visitors from around the world. Many believe that a modern visitor center will help keep the destination relevant and engaging for years to come.
While the city is currently seeking new bids, officials say the project is not on hold. They plan to continue moving forward and will share updates as more information becomes available.
