The Church Studio in Tulsa has been awarded a $393,000 Route 66 Grant to install a large sculpture of an egg, which is the symbol of Shelter Records, the recording label of Leon Russell.

Egg sculpture designed in Tulsa, to be fabricated in Broken Arrow

"It weighs thousands of pounds, so we have to make sure we have the right infrastructure, said Teresa Knox, the CEO. "We're working on lighting, and we think it's going to be a really, really popular selfie spot."

First grant application denied

Knox said she didn't succeed the first time she applied for the grant through the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.

"I thought, 'you know what I'm going to try,' so I wrote the grant and it was denied, and I thought 'you know I'm going to try it one more time'," said Knox.

Egg and "S" reflect Shelter Records and emerging Studio Row

The neighborhood around The Church Studio is growing, with new businesses around it, and more coming soon. The new sculpture will be diagonally across Third Street from the studio.

"I think people are going to enjoy the egg and ask questions like 'What is this egg, what does it mean?'" said Knox.
