Thunder guard Aaron Wiggins didn’t expect to be the first player to speak during Oklahoma City’s NBA championship celebration, but he embraced the moment with a message shaped on the bus ride over.

“I was like, I got to find just a couple of points that I want to cover,” Wiggins said. “But it didn’t take long. The crowd kind of provided the energy, and I just went with the flow.”

Wiggins, who played a key role in the Thunder’s Finals performance, opened up about overcoming shooting struggles and how the team-first mentality carried them to the title.

“No one on our team was about to win — we were just trying to win games,” he said. “So I just didn’t think about it, just kind of played through. And you know, we won the championship. So we’re here now.”

Now a champion, Wiggins reflected on how far he’s come since being projected as an undrafted player.

“I wasn’t really supposed to be here,” Wiggins said. “I was projected to go undrafted. I was like 94 on a top 100 board. Then after the combine, 75. Then, right before the draft, 56. Even still, it was like undrafted. But perfect situation — coaching staff, front office who trusted me.”

He said one of the earliest moments he realized the team’s potential was a win in the Play-In Tournament two years ago.

“That was most of our guys’ first kind of postseason atmosphere,” he said. “That game alone, I felt like, oh man, we’re the best team in the league.”

While Wiggins isn’t ready to think about chasing another title just yet, he knows what it took to earn the first one.

“You sacrifice everything. You sacrifice your individual goals for the team success,” he said. “To be a champion just speaks volumes to every single player in the locker room, every single coach, our front office, and the people in this arena.”
