An interchange improvement project is in the works for Highway 412 between Catoosa and Inola.
The Oklahoma Department of Transportation is planning to reconstruct Highway 412 at 4170 Road to include new highway bridges over the road, with on and off-ramps for the highway.
It says Highway 412 will stay open during construction, shifting to one side of the highway while crews work on the opposite side. 4170 Road would close during construction.
ODOT says the intersection is a safety concern because the left turn lanes on the highway don’t have enough space for vehicles to speed up or slow down.
The department says vehicles also must cross four lanes of high-speed traffic to get to the other side of 4170 Road.
ODOT says 24,000 vehicles travel on the highway every day, which it says will grow to more than 40,000 by 2045, making it even more difficult to cross.
It also says 14 crashes and one death happened within the project area between 2017 and 2021.
ODOT says the new improvements will reduce crashes by up to 40%.
This project is part of a larger study with Arkansas to convert Highway 412 from a US highway to an interstate.
The goal is to link I-35 in Oklahoma to I-49 in Arkansas, a 190-mile distance.

ODOT has posted the project presentation, exhibits, and frequently asked questions on its website. The department isn’t hosting an in-person public meeting, but people can submit comments online through July 8.
No start date for the project has been announced yet.
