A local gospel group with deep Tulsa roots is celebrating a new milestone in their decades-long music journey. The Peacemakers, made up of Jeff Taylor, Roger Sharpe and Phil Taylor, released their latest album Almost Home.
Jeff and Phil Taylor are first cousins; their fathers were brothers. The group’s musical roots trace back to an Easter sunrise service decades ago, when they found themselves singing hymns around a church piano.
“We were waiting for Sunday school to start, just flipping through a songbook called For Pete’s Sake,” Jeff said. “Phil was playing piano, and we just kind of realized — we’ve got something here.”
Their voices blended so naturally, they began performing at youth events, church services and community gatherings, quickly gaining a local following as teens.
The Peacemakers first recorded in 1973, performing gospel covers inspired by artists like Andre Crouch and The Imperials. Life and family led to a hiatus, but they reunited in the early ’90s with a new focus on original music. This latest album, Almost Home, is their first in more than 10 years.
“Our cousin in Nashville, who’s now a music producer, said ‘I think you guys should come out here and let me help you,’” Roger said. “It’s a mix of old and new — songs we did back in the day, plus some originals and newer material.”
Fans will have a chance to hear Almost Home live at a special concert on July 19 at 5 West Outpost in Prattville. The venue is located at 5 W. 41st Street.
