More drivers than ever are hitting the road in aging vehicles, raising the risk of unexpected – and expensive – breakdowns just as summer travel ramps up. AAA Oklahoma is urging motorists to take proactive steps to avoid roadside trouble.
According to S&P Global Mobility, the average age of cars in the U.S. is now 12.8 years. AAA research shows vehicles 10 years and older are twice as likely to experience roadside issues, potentially derailing summer plans.
AAA says they responded to nearly 59,000 emergency calls in Oklahoma.
To help, AAA compiled a list of top maintenance items that can help ensure a smooth and safe summer journey.
Automotive batteries typically last three to five years, and extreme heat can cause them to fail faster. AAA recommends testing batteries annually after the three-year mark. AAA locations offer free electronic multi-point inspections that include battery checks.
Make sure your tires have adequate tread depth and are properly inflated for warmer temperatures. Consider rotating and aligning them to improve fuel efficiency and reduce wear. Proper tire care also enhances safety in wet conditions.
Brakes should be replaced around every 30,000 miles, though that can vary based on driving habits and conditions. Effective braking is crucial for avoiding accidents.
Routine oil changes and fluid checks are key. That includes coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and even windshield washer fluid. Neglecting them can lead to severe – and expensive – engine damage.
Good visibility is essential in all weather. Wiper blades should be changed regularly, especially before long road trips.
Beyond the battery, issues with the alternator or ignition system can leave drivers stranded. Routine inspections can catch problems early.
Often overlooked, these components can bring your trip to a halt if they fail. Inspect for wear and replace as needed.
